Partners works primarily with refugees and displaced people. The Karen
come from Burma, a country torn by 50 years of war inflicted by a brutal
military regime. There are more than 200,000 refugees in camps along
the Thai-Burma border and more than 1 million internally displaced
people on the run inside Burma.
The regime carries out systematic repression of the people of Burma,
including ongoing ethnic cleansing campaigns against minority groups
and pro-democracy groups. They oppress the population with random arrests,
extra-judicial killings, rape, forced labor and military service, torture,
burning of villages, stealing food and land, and destruction of the
environment.
There are more than 50,000 child soldiers in Burma, more than any
other country in the world.
The people of Burma suffer terribly and Partners works to ease their
pain, aid them in survival, and help them to keep the hope that is
found in God.
